Henri Matisse.
1869 - 1954 H. S. A. A.
Born 1869 French Fauvism painter. He
became a student of the painter Odilon Redon and during this time his
studies in art led him to the work of Cezanne and Manet. In 1905 he
moved to the south of France and Joined the artist Andre Derain at
Collioure. The influence of Derain changed his palette which now had
become much more colourful. The colours on the coast around Collioure
inspired him and his paintings began to show a new style, full of
colour and movement.
During the 1914 - 1918 war he traveled
to North Africa and during this time a move into 'abstract forms' began
by 1916. In 1917 he returned to the Cote d'Azur area in the south of
France where he painted many pictures in his new style.
Matisse died in 1954 leaving a great
quantity of drawings, water-colors and oils in his studio.
